Amy Grant
S inger and songwriter Amy Grant lives in Nashville, Tennessee, with her GRAMMY Award-winning country singer husband Vince Gill and their blended family of five children. The pretty brunette with the infectious smile has won numerous accolades for her music. The Dove Award for contemporary album of the year and Artist of the Year, and the GRAMMY Award for best gospel performance. She was the first artist to perform a Christian music song for a GRAMMY broadcast. Her song “Baby, Baby” was the first pop song by a Christian artist to reach the coveted number one spot on Billboard's chart.
Amy started writing songs when she was just fifteen. Actively involved in a youth group at a hippy church down on Music Row in Nashville, a lot of the groups' kids lived in public housing. There were drug problems and teen pregnancies during the time she was involved with the group. It was a very different world from where Amy went to school.
She describes her father, a doctor, as a very gentle, quiet man. She was well taken care of and went to a fine girls' school. Amy was drawn to this church “because, there, I felt like all the Bible teaching I had in my very sheltered world just came face-to-face with people having real-life problems,” she says.
When she first started writing songs, Amy would sing them for the kids in the youth group at this church. One day, one of the kids said to her “I just get this feeling when you start singing, Amy, that if you would just let God, that He would use you.” Amy remembers kneeling down in that circle of kids and asking them “Would you guys pray for me? Pray that whatever God wants to happen in my life I won't get in the way.”
That prayer in her teens with the hippy church youth group set her mind in a new way. Rather than wanting to be a star, Amy wanted to feel a sense of purpose with her music. She was willing to let God use her to spread His Word.
She feels what's happened to her career-wise was like the little boy who showed up with five loaves and two fish. You know the story: Jesus prayed and it turned into enough to feed 5,000 with baskets of food left over!
